A new elderly care home for dementia sufferers, Deanwood Lodge, was officially opened last Thursday (Thursday, May 24), by the Lord Lieutenant of Gloucestershire, Dame Janet Trotter DBE.

The opening, which coincided with National Dementia Awareness Week (May 20-26), took place at 11am and was well attended by care workers from across the region, Gloucestershire council members and local residents. Following the official cutting of the ribbon by Dame Janet Trotter DBE, guests were invited to tour the new facility throughout the afternoon.

Deanwood Lodge is at the former site of Uplands Nursing Home in Maisemore. Since being taken over by new management at the end of 2011, the home has undergone an extensive refurbishment and upgrading and was officially accredited by the Care Quality Commission (CQC) as meeting all essential standards of care in March.

Mitesh Dhanak, Director of Operations said,

We are delighted to have the Lord Lieutenant to officially open Deanwood Lodge during National Dementia Awareness Week. A lot of effort has gone into working with local suppliers and recruiting the right staff to create an environment that truly feels like home and where residents can continue their daily lives. Deanwood Lodge is a place where dignity is respected and comfort and independence is maintained.

Dame Janet Trotter says, Its an exciting week for Gloucestershire as a county and its significant to be opening this home during National Dementia Awareness week. I have experienced dementia myself with my own father and know how important it is to find the right care and support but also the right environment, and from what I have seen here today, and from talking with the residents, the environment is very homely here and the residents are very happy.

Deanwood Lodge offers 47 single bedrooms, 37 of which are en-suite and five with en-suite wet rooms. Every element of the design has been carefully thought out to meet the needs of those suffering from dementia including the colour schemes, the furnishings and the layout. Staff are working closely with residents and their families to develop person-centred care plans that are shared with each member of the care team to ensure consistency and continuity of care.
