Dartmouth Community College student Joel Atwell has a spring in his step after being selected to play basketball for England this summer.

It is a fantastic achievement for Joel, who earned his place in the squad after taking part in a rigorous training session in Cirencester, with England team coaches and young players from across the UK.

Joel was one of 26 young people selected to go to Cirencester from a field of 200 players, and the 12-year-old was jubilant when he made the final dozen who will now go on to represent their country at an international basketball tournament in Estonia in August.

Joel, who lives in Paignton, will face teams from France, Germany, Russia, Switzerland and the USA.

Dartmouth Community College head teacher Chris Long said the school was thrilled for Year 7 student Joel.

This is a fantastic opportunity for Joel and really shows the immense hard work and commitment he has had to put in to be chosen. We wish him every success in Estonia this August and will be in touch with his family to hear about his progress.

Joel is a great sportsman and in school has shown himself to be a tremendous all rounder. We are always delighted to hear about the achievements of all of our students and encourage their commitment to sport both within school and beyond.

Joels England team selection also means he will attend the Athletics Performance Centre Academy for the next two years where training will be provided by England coaches.

Proud Dad Steve Atwell said: We are so excited for Joel and are so proud of this tremendous achievement. We have always known hes a great player and now hes being rewarded for all his hard work with this incredible opportunity.
