A Gloucester hairdresser proved she is a cut above by trekking up Mount Everest.

Joanne Hughes, who works at Blushes in Gloucester, and her client Anna Tarbet reached Everest Base camp in Nepal at a height of 18,192 ft.

It was the third and final climb for the duo whoare raising money for charity. They also scaled Kilimanjaro and Scarfell Pike.

The challenge, called Three Peaks with a Twist, raised more than 3,000 to be shared between the National Star College, Winstons Wish and the World Land Trust.

They came up with the idea during a hair cut. Anna, 32, mentioned Everest Base Camp to Joanne. They discussed it over a few glasses of wine and the challenge was born.

During their trek up Kilimanjaro they had to cope with -27C temperatures. This climb to Everest was far more enjoyable and our favourite, said Joanne, aged 33.

It was a much longer trek and I was worried we wouldnt make it but after awhile you just walk through the pain barrier, said Joanne who struggled with headaches due to the oxygen levels.

The weather was so good. It was just the two of us and our guide so we stopped at tea houses along the way, said Joanne. It was so interesting and the scenery so stunning.

Anna works at the Land Registry and both women live in Cheltenham. For the past 10 months they have trained, fundraised and concentrated on their appeal.

What will be the pairs next challenge? We would like to do some more trekking but for now I think I would just like to stay at sea level, said Joanne.
