Award-winning critic and TV star Waldemar Januszczak will share his passion for art with a new generation of writers at the Meller Merceux Prize for Art Criticism dinner on November 22. Oxford-based Meller Merceux Gallery has joined forces with Oxford University's Edgar Wind Society to offer a prize for the best review of a recent exhibition of modern or contemporary art.

As chief art critic for The Times, Januszczak has written on a wide range of art-historical topics and is the star of TV programmes such as The Michaelangelo Code: Lost Secrets of the Sistine Chapel and Mad Tracey from Margate. Described as doing for art what David Attenborough has done for the natural world, the man responsible for putting the Turner Prize on TV will be speaking on hot topics in contemporary art as the Prize is awarded at a black-tie dinner held in the prestigious surroundings of Oriel College.

Established and run by students, The Edgar Wind Society is a cross-University group promoting interest in the visual arts. Named after the University's first ever Professor of Art History the society often plays host to renowned speakers such as Professor Martin Kemp. Meller Merceux is the citys most high-profile commercial art gallery and has made headlines in recent months with landmark shows such as Picasso and Tribal Art.

Gallery Director Aidan Meller says, Contemporary art is all about communicating ideas and sponsoring the prize has been a fantastic opportunity for us to connect with the talented young art writers at the University. As well as the prize-giving itself, weve been celebrating their work by publishing some of the most outstanding entries in The Art Collector magazine. The prize will re-open in 2013.

Event date: November 22 (by invitation only)
