Two artists from Gloucestershire have won top awards from the Society of Woman Artists, London, presented by HRH Princess Michael of Kent.

Ann Blockley SWA, from Moreton-in-Marsh, won the HRH Princess Michael of Kent Award for The most outstanding watercolour for the painting Single Rose and Lindy Allfrey, a portrait painter from Stow-on-the-Wold, won the President and Vice President Choice Award for Model in New York, in oil.

We didnt realise we had both won awards until we met at the private view in the Mall Galleries, London, says Lindy.

Out of the 400 paintings selected to be shown from around the world, the top awards were won by artists who live four miles apart!

The Society has enjoyed Royal patronage since 1865. It has a unique history dedicated to promoting art by women and has held an annual exhibition in London ever since it was founded in 1855. The exhibition now takes place at the prestigious Mall Galleries, The Mall, London, SW1, and showcases a stunning and eclectic mix of artwork in all media. The Society encourages variety and versatility and features some of the finest contemporary women artists from all over the world.

Many famous artists have been members: Dame Laura Knight, the first woman Royal Academician for over 160 years, was elected President of the S.W.A in 1932 and the world-famous illustrator Mabel Lucy Atwell was also a member.

Lindy has a Studio Gallery in Sheep Street, Stow-on-the-Wold, does portrait commissions and holds portraiture workshops. Ann has written several books on her individual watercolour style and holds workshops around the world. Her Studio Gallery is open by appointment when she is not exhibiting elsewhere.
