If we have one species that needs no introduction, it must surely be the Meerkats! Made famous first by David Attenboroughs Meerkats United and then more recently by the advertisements for a certain insurance company, the Meerkat has leapt from relative obscurity to worldwide fame. They are a naturally curious animal, leaving no stone unturned in their constant search for insects and any other delicacies that are unearthed by their probing paws.

Native to Southern Africa, Meerkats live in family groups with a dominant breeding female, her chosen suitor of the moment and various offspring and relatives. Subordinate animals usually take care of the child minding, leaving the main female free to lead the group in foraging parties. They will take any type of insect, even tackling the most venomous Scorpions with a nifty bite to disable the dangerous stinging tail they will even mob Cobras to make sure their territory is free from potential predators.

At the Park our family live free from the threat of Cobras in our Walled Garden area. They currently have four growing youngsters and despite their pampered life, still post one of the less dominant group members as sentinel who will perch at the highest point of the exhibit keeping their eyes peeled for potential aerial predators. They will alert the group to the presence overhead of Buzzards and Red Kites but also to low flying aeroplanes a full time job when you live so close to RAF Brize Norton!
