The Gloucestershire Schools Christmas Lecture returns next month

On Wednesday, December 5 School children from across the county will be treated to a festive science extravaganza with the return of the annual Gloucestershire Schools Christmas Lecture. Produced by The Times Cheltenham Science Festival in partnership with the Honourable Company of Gloucestershire, the Christmas Lecture brings all the fun of the Science Festival to the University of Gloucestershire, in a bid to inspire and engage inquisitive young minds.

Since 2010 the free Christmas Lecture has amazed more than 1,200 local key stage three pupils with two hours of entertaining, inspiring and mind-expanding science. As well as enjoying science at its most spectacular, in 2012 pupils will learn more about the benefits of studying maths, technology, engineering and science at GCSE.

This years alternative festive celebration promises a feast of explosions, experiments and hands-on fun, courtesy of two stellar scientists energy explorer Jamie Gallagher and maths juggler Colin Wright.

In his talk on indestructible energy, Jamie Gallagher will be burning food, bouncing balls and generating electricity in his quest to show the pupils what energy is and why it can't be created or destroyed. Juggler Colin Wright will explain how maths holds the secrets to the art of juggling a skill which has fascinated people for centuries. Both Jamie and Colin promise to celebrate the festive season in explosive style

Patrick Brooke, Warden of the Honourable Company, is delighted that, through generous sponsorship from local companies and charities, it has been possible to put on the lectures for the third year running. Particular thanks go to Renishaw, Spirax Sarco, Ecclesiastical Insurance, Zyex Group and the Hitchins Family Trust.

Tickets for the Gloucestershire Schools Christmas Lecture are free, and available to Key Stage three pupils at schools throughout Gloucestershire. School booking enquiries should be made through the Cheltenham Festivals Education team as detailed below.
