Capturing the natural world, home and away

Inspired by her Gloucestershire surroundings and childhood in Kenya, Karen Davies is a unique artist specialising in sporting and equine art. Davies distinctive style has sprung from a true understanding of both her craft and subject.

Stimulated by English life and country sports her art reflects a desire to portray such occasions in their most candid form. A subtlety surrounds her paintings, revealing the most honest and unassuming aspects of rural life. Davies talents extend beyond the racecourse and hunt to Africa, her native home. Portraits of Somali women and African Wildebeest highlight the extent to her perceptive talent that is rich with honesty and beauty.

Born in 1976, Davies grew up and was educated in Kenya where she grew to love animals and a heart for her surrounding landscape. In 1997 Davies moved to England and attended the Royal Agricultural College in Cirencester where she completed an agricultural business degree. Following this she worked as a bloodstock agent, buying and selling racehorses yearlings, foals, mares and stallions. However, as demand grew for her equine paintings Davies gave up her job and concentrated being a full-time artist.

A growing reputation has led Davies to undertake a number of equine and canine commissions, including paintings for Sheikh Hamdon al Maktoum from Shadwell Estates Company and Prince Khalid Abdullah from Juddmante Farms. Davies prefers to work with pastels however for private commissions the choice of pastel, oil, paper, canvas or board is left to the client.

This summer Davies will be presenting her artwork at number of summer exhibitions and county shows. From the 6th-10th August her work will be displayed at the Royal Dublin Horse Show. Again in Ireland Davies' work will be exhibited from the 29th September-3rd August with Alan Rodmond's work at Goff Millian sportsman Yearling Sales in Kill.
