Since opening its doors in March, CALA Homes’ 59 Lansdown development has proven to be popular with house hunters looking for luxury living in a perfect location
Comprising a stunning collection of 25 five-bedroom villas and 42 one and two-bedroom apartments, including four penthouses, 59 Lansdown brings something unique to Cheltenham and has been carefully designed to blend some of the most appealing elements of the Regency architecture so synonymous with the town.
With hierarchal proportions, high ceilings, bespoke tall doors and sophisticated cornicing, the homes at 59 Lansdown are an architects' dream - as Steve Davies, Architectural Manager at CALA Homes (Midlands), explains: "59 Lansdown is the first Regency-style new development to launch in Cheltenham for many years, and it was important for us to capture the essence of the era in the design, construction and interiors of both the villas and apartments at the development.
"We wanted to bring together the best of Regency grandeur with the most modern of design features, and the result is a scheme we are incredibly proud of.
"The concept of 59 Lansdown was to have a development that fits in perfectly with the local vernacular, so we designed the feature apartment complex as the landmark focal point from Lansdown Road, in keeping with the building hierarchy that can be found all the way along the outskirts of the town.
"In terms of the exterior of the buildings, we chose a high quality reproduction ashlar stone in three variances of shade and size to ensure an authentic appearance. The homes are timber framed, reflecting a tradition method of building, and the roofing for each townhouse was made with natural slate, consistent with various parts of Cheltenham and bringing a high quality finish. Aluminium framed windows have been used across both villas and apartments, in keeping with the high quality materials of the conservation area, providing a modern and highly efficient weather-proof finish."
The structure of the homes at 59 Lansdown have been designed with Regency proportions, making the homes large in size with slender and elegant elevations.
Steve continues: "The windows in each property are larger on the ground floor and get smaller as you move up the floors. This hierarchy automatically draws the eye to the height of the rooms.
"Acoustically, each of the townhouses and apartments have been designed to exceed the required standards so that each of them offer a quiet and tranquil environment.
Internally, the properties are stunning and are designed to maximise the natural light that floods each home thanks to the large windows and strategically-placed roof lanterns.
Steve adds: "Thanks to the lanterns, internal staircases within the villas are flooded with light which channels all the way to the ground floor - something which is in complete contrast to older, traditional townhouses.
"The lounges are on the first floor of each villa, which make the most of the stunning views towards the Leckhampton Hills for some houses, and onto the newly-created court yard for others. The high ceilings are one of the most noticeable and impactful features in the townhouses and are complemented with bespoke tall doors that continue the visual effect."
The townhouses and apartments also feature a modern internal specification, with underfloor heating, integrated kitchens and modern bathrooms with a high specification.
As well as stunning homes, the street scene at 59 Lansdown is just as attractive - with the curved layout designed to create a focal point at the heart of the development in keeping with the overall Regency style.
"We worked closely with the local authority throughout the design process of 59 Lansdown", says Steve. "We've planted high-quality trees to ensure the development sits within, and enhances, the local conservation area, and used wooden pergolas to soften the visual impact of parked cars.
"59 Lansdown truly transcends the ordinary and really is the jewel in the CALA crown within the Midlands region. Every detail inside and outside each home has been carefully considered to bring these modern period-inspired properties to life, and we're delighted with the response we've received to date. The homes, and the lifestyle, on offer at 59 Lansdown provide something unique to everyone and we're positive that those in the market for a luxury, yet low-maintenance, energy efficient home will not be disappointed."
The homes at 59 Lansdown are just a short walk from the thriving town centre, which is packed full of amenities including shops, restaurants and cafés. Homeowners will also have the luxury of relaxing in the award-winning gardens of Hatherley Park or the Montpellier Gardens, home to bandstand concerts during the summer, which is just a short walk away. For travel further afield, Cheltenham Spa train station is less than a mile away, providing connections to Birmingham, Worcester and Bristol.
