Procuring stunning artwork is an investment – and the same can be said for a handmade rug from Jennings. After being in the business for more than 30 years, Clare Jennings is an expert on finding the perfect piece to suit your home

Lying behind the Tudor frontage of a shop nestled a stone throw’s away from Tewkesbury Abbey, you’ll find a treasure trove of beautiful rugs, unique accessories and furnishings all hailing from warmer climates thousands of miles east.

Specialising in handmade oriental rugs, JW Jennings has come a long way from its opening in the 60s, when Jack Jennings offered a range of fitted carpets and a humble collection of handmade rugs from his small shop in the medieval market town.

With a passion for handmade items crafted in the east, Jack procured rugs from many different countries in the region and the collection grew from there. Nowadays people travel from all over the country to visit the Church Street store.

Now with daughter Clare at the helm, and her passion for sourcing beautiful works of art from the East inherited from her father, the collection continues to grow.

“Very often people ask to look around and compare it to an art gallery; an Aladdin’s Cave of colour, design and texture. People say that the smell of wool – a smell we’re immune to ourselves as we’re here in the shop everyday – conjures up a scene from the east.

“We’re more than happy to talk to visitors about our experiences of travelling abroad, where we buy the rugs from, where they’re made, what they’re made of and the dyes used, right through to the processes the rug undergoes before it arrives here in Tewkesbury.

“It’s a fascinating, yet vast, subject and we hope we can whet the appetites of people that are interested in one day investing in a rug.”

From pieces that sit perfectly along the fireplace, durable yet distinctive runners to line hallways and statement pieces to complement the furnishings of a larger room, there’s something to fit any room and suit any style: with around 1000 rugs available at any one time in the shop, there’s certainly plenty of choice.

The addition of a rug into a home is a great one: whether you live in a large country house, a modern apartment, Victorian terrace or any type of home you can imagine, a rug can transform the room.

Clare says: “It’s amazing the transformation of putting a rug down; it adds interest, pulls together the colours of the room and makes for a wholly inviting experience.

“Depending on the size of the room and the style of the house, certain rugs look better in certain locations. For instance, silk rugs suit the smooth texture of a marble fireplace while a woollen rug, with a geometric or tribal design, might look wonderful in front of a brick fireplace.”

Expert knowledge like the above can help potential customers in the pursuit of a rug and Clare and the JW Jennings team are on hand to provide such invaluable answers after years procuring a wealth of understanding in the trade.

When seeking a rug, Clare advises coming in with an idea of what you’re after (it doesn’t always happen!). “Very often we have customers come in after they’ve done some measuring and they perhaps have bought in a cushion, a tieback from their curtains or a brick from their fireplace to help us pick out the colours in the rug to bring out the client’s furnishings.”

Expertly crafted within different tribes and hailing from different towns and villages in the east, each rug is individual. The range includes pieces in various shapes and sizes, designs, textures, qualities and prices, and even bespoke rugs are available for those who have an idea clear in their mind. In exceptional circumstances, Jennings offer made-to-measure rugs, where customers can obtain a bespoke piece with some control over colour size and design. Although, this can take six to nine months.

Unlike a machine manufactured rug a hand-made oriental rug purchased from Jennings is likely to last a lifetime, occasionally being so treasured that it is passed on throughout the family. At times these much-loved pieces may require some attention. This is quite normal and Jennings have expert restorers at their disposal.

The handmade rugs are the main ‘hurrah’ of Jennings. Travelling in various countries, Clare collects all manner of beautiful accessories and artefacts she believes will enrich a client’s interiors. In Jennings you can expect to see an array of unique items from detailed Indian painted boxes to colourful Persian kilim bags. Lighting is also now available in store, the latest addition being gorgeous glass mosaic lamps, made in Turkey and wired in the UK, which are already proving popular. You can find the full range here.

We all love receiving compliments on our home and interiors, especially so when murmurs of delight are aimed at a statement piece you’ve finally bought after coveting it for a while. Procuring stunning artwork is an investment – and the same can be said for a rug from Jennings.
