Your bathroom is one of the busiest rooms in the home, so it has to be a space that works for you. From easy access showers to a full refurbishment, bathroom expert Phil Dawes from the Walk In Shower Company shares some inspiring ideas.

Wet rooms

Easy to maintain, easy to access and stylish, there’s little wonder that wet rooms are becoming increasingly popular. Transforming your bathroom into a wet room will come with some disruption – the whole room will need to be waterproofed and it’s recommended that underfloor heating is installed – but the results are stunning.

“This is the perfect solution for people in wheelchairs or perhaps who have mobility problems and are struggling to climb into the bath,” says Phil. “There’s a massive range of tiles and decorative wall panels available, so it’s a beautiful environment to bathe in and last for years and years.”

Easy access showers

How often do you use the bath? If it’s rarely, and you are finding it difficult to climb into the bath, an easy access shower, with a low level shower tray, makes a practical alternative.

“Most people haven’t got time to have a bath,” says Phil. “They may use it now and again, but nowadays most people use the shower.”

Easy access showers come in a wide range of styles, are easy to keep clean and, as they can be installed without having to reconfigure the bathroom, are affordable.

“This is a straightforward bathing solution,” says Phil. “And as walk in showers are installed on the footprint of the bath, there is minimum disruption during the work.”

Walk around showers

If you love a minimalist look, why not consider a walk around or walk through shower? Glass or mirrored panels look elegant and stylish and they’re designed to be easily accessible.

Decorative wall panels

Available in an array of colours and finishes – with no grout for mould and mildew to creep into – decorative wall panels make an attractive alternative to traditional tiles for the bathroom. “Customers love the simplicity of wall panels,” says Phil. “There is so much choice available – all sorts of designs and finishes, including matt, high polish and stone - and you don’t have the problems of mould and mildew or cracking.”

Full bathroom refurbishment

As well as being a pleasure to use, a beautiful bathroom with the wow factor can really add value to your home when you come to sell.

Which is why, if you’re planning on investing in a full bathroom refurbishment, Phil recommends taking your time and consulting trusted experts. If it’s a long time since your bathroom had a makeover, you may be surprised by how things have changed, so it’s useful to know what your options are.

“Bathrooms have really moved on so there is lots to consider,” says Phil. “From decorative wall panelling to condensation-proof uPVC ceiling tiles to LED downlighting. A good bathroom company will plan everything down to the last detail and make sure that it is perfect for you and your needs.”
