After launching our search for a Cotswold Life Artist in Residence last year, we were delighted with the response we received from artists across the region.
From stained glass, to paper-cutting, mosaic and even cake sculpture, the range of entries was diverse and of an extremely high standard, making the final decision a difficult one, but decide we did…
The winner of #CLAIR16 is Kitty Kovacevic
Kitty studied Fine Art, graduating from Falmouth University in 2010 and since then has been involved in numerous local exhibitions and most recently raising money through auctioning artwork for the Evesham Bell Tower Appeal. Her work is driven by a passion for architecture and how this reflects the communities we live in. Kitty uses photography as a starting point for her work, taking snapshots of interesting buildings and landscape features and reworking them into collages. These form the basis of detailed landscape drawings that combine incongruous features and play around with perspective to create alternative versions of recognisable places. The resulting work aims to distill the character and essence of a place whilst encouraging a viewer to ‘think local’ and reconsider their everyday surroundings in an effort to preserve and celebrate the unique culture, heritage and community that we sometimes take for granted.
“I am extremely excited to be selected as Cotswold Life Artist in Residence 2016, I have lived and worked in the area for the majority of my life and to be able to reflect the architecture of the area I know so well will be an honour and delight. I really can’t wait to start making new work, and throughout the coming year share my latest discoveries of the Cotswolds with you as I take time to look more closely at what is on our doorstep.”
Deborah Allan from Wychwood Art and Royal Artist in Residence Jeremy Houghton comment: “We are delighted to have found such a fresh and innovative artist. Kitty blends traditional imagery in a modern perspective which we feel will be exciting for readers and for the art exhibition at Wychwood Art gallery in Stow-on-the-Wold. We are very excited to see what Kitty will be producing over the coming months.”
The 2016 Artist in Residence is a collaboration between Cotswold Life, Jeremy Houghton of Artists in Residence and Deborah Allan of Wychwood Art, Stow-on-the-Wold. The prize includes £1,000, a bi-monthly feature in Cotswold Life displaying a piece inspired by a feature in the magazine, a monthly column from the Artist in Residence’s point of view, and a solo exhibition at Wychwood Art early in 2017. #CLAIR16
