The George Hotel, located on St. Georges Road in Cheltenham town centre was purchased 1 February in an off-market deal with Cotswold Inns and Hotels.
Cotswold Inns and Hotels own properties around the Cotswolds in Worcestershire, Oxfordshire and Gloucestershire. The company was launched in 1997 by Michael and Pamela Horton who first acquired The Broadway Hotel.
The George Hotel, a Grade II* listed Georgian property in Cheltenham will become the ninth hotel in the Cotswold Inns and Hotels company, and the first to have a central town location.
Speaking about their recent purchase of The George Hotel, Michael Horton said: “we are thrilled to have had the opportunity to acquire such a prestigious hotel in Cheltenham with such a brilliant location”
Cotswolds hospitality expert, Peter Brunt of Colliers International Hotels, who negotiated the sale said: “I gather staff were surprised about the sale but delighted to hear that the new owners are such a stable and well respected company.”
The George Hotel is well-known to Cheltonians, especially thanks to Monty’s Bar and Brasserie which has been a post-racing hotspot for many years. Residents of Cheltenham can now look forward to The George Hotel, which remains the largest privately owned hotel in Cheltenham, being fully refurbished this Autumn.
The refurbishment will be led by Pamela Horton, aiming to bring both the accommodation and public areas of the 3-star hotel more in-line with the Cotswold Inns and Hotels vision of contemporary chic mixed with classic Cotswold charm.
