A Cheltenham specialist beer and cider shop celebrates its second birthday with award nominations

Favourite Beers on Hewlett Road, Cheltenham celebrates its second birthday this Saturday with the news that it has been nominated in two categories at next years Drinks Retaining Awards. Earlier this year the shop, which is Gloucestershires only specialist beer and cider retailer, walked away with the prestigious Independent Beer Retailer of the Year trophy at the awards ceremony held at the Dorchester hotel in London. This year they have once again reached the final three in the same category, but have also been named as one of the three finalists in the Independent Cider Retailer of the Year group.

Owner of Favourite Beers, Leigh Norwood says, Its great that we will be able to defend our title for the Independent Beer retailer award next year, we are in a strong position as we have continued to improve over the last twelve months. Our stock range has grown and diversified and we are creating a great beer and cider community around the shop thanks to the use of social media and regular in-store events such as tutored tasting evenings and meet the brewer events. The icing on the cake is that we also have the chance to compete for the Independent Cider award, but I know we will be up against some stiff competition in both categories.

Favourite Beers opened in October 2010 and to celebrate both their second birthday and their award nominations they are hosting a Celebration of Beer and Cider day at the shop this Saturday October 6 (10.30am7pm). Among the treats on offer are special goodie bags for the first 20 customers who spend over 20, in-store beer and cider tastings, special limited offers and 10 per cent discount on all purchases made on the day. Customers will also be able to buy take-away draught beer, a service which has just been launched to tie in with Cask Ale Week and which adds to their draught cider take-away service which has been successfully running for the past twelve months.

In their first two years Favourite Beers have stocked 955 different UK beers from 180 UK breweries. They regularly stock beers from 15 of Gloucestershires breweries as well as many from adjacent counties. To keep the available selection fresh, new beers from three or four breweries from further afield are rotated in on a monthly basis. The shops international selection includes large offerings from Belgium, Germany and the USA (each of which have their own sections in the shop) as well as many more esoteric European and world beers. On the cider front over 210 different ciders and perrys have been stocked over the two years, with the majority being sourced from small cider producers in Gloucestershire, Worcestershire, Herefordshire and Somerset.
