Monty’s Brasserie in St Georges Road, Cheltenham, is celebrating its tenth birthday, and throwing a cocktail competition in the mix for good measure

The restaurant officially opened its doors on September 10, 2003 and was created within the hotel dining room of the adjacent George Hotel. Over four weeks, a complete refurbishment was undertaken – out went the ‘swirly’ carpets, pink tablecloths and sachets of ketchup and in came oak floor boards, wooden tables and a bespoke bar – and the staff of course.

After one year, the restaurant received an award from the AA for consistently high quality food, followed by a 2nd award for two AA rosettes which has been maintained to this day.

Several of the dishes which appeared on the first ever menu such as Scallops, Mussels and Thai Crispy duck, are still among their best sellers. Monty’s has made a particularly concerted effort to use ingredients sourced from local suppliers, including locally reared steaks and fresh seafood.

Owners Jeremy and Alison Shaw said “Monty’s success is down to a combination of consistently good, high quality food at all times, listening to customer feedback, a great atmosphere and friendly knowledgeable staff. If you get that right, you are going to succeed.”

Beneath the Brasserie lies Monty’s Cocktail Bar, opened one year after the restaurant. It will be hosting a brand new cocktail competition in an effort to find talented mixers who can create a winning festive cocktail using Buffalo Trace bourbon from Kentucky.

The conditions of the competition are as follows:

• Entrants must use a maximum of six ingredients with no more than 50ml of the bourbon

• Entrants must be non-professional bar tenders over the age of 18.

• Entries should be submitted by Friday, November 1, via email to:

• Entries must include the name of the new cocktail with a description, method and list of ingredients together with the entrant’s name and contact details.

• The top six cocktails will go through to the final on Thursday, November 14, 2013, and are to be held at Monty’s Cocktail Bar in St George’s Road, Cheltenham at 7.30pm.

Alison Shaw, co-owner of Monty’s at The George Hotel, says of the competition: “This is a great opportunity for people to have some fun. With the run up to Christmas, companies could have a go and create some competition amongst their employees. We know there are a lot of people who live in Cheltenham and Gloucester who could create some wonderful ‘Festive Spirit’ and we are looking forward to featuring the winning Cocktail on Monty’s Cocktail list throughout December. There are also some great prizes to be won.”

Monty’s is open 7 days a week for lunch and dinner.
