Cotswold Life Food & Drink Awards 2018: Cheese of the Year

Archant

Cheese is an integral part of the Cotswold food scene and we’re pleased to announce we have picked a winner worthy of the ‘Cheese of the Year’ Award...

The Cotswold Life Food & Drink Awards are one of the biggest events in the local calendar and it is hugely anticipated by the region’s food and drink industry all year round.

We champion the best local producers, suppliers and businesses that are passionate about the Cotswold countryside and the future of our local environment.

Thanks to both the nominations of the public and our well-respected judges, we have picked a winner worthy of the ‘Cheese of the Year’ Award, sponsored by Paxton & Whitfield.

This year’s finalists

Cerney Ash, Cerney Cheese, North Cerney

Cerney Ash goat’s cheese received high praise from the judges. They were impressed that the packaging was not over branded and enhanced the cheese and its shape. The cheese is well established with an international reputation, having won multiple awards and it truly celebrates artisan methods - plus it’s lovely to eat!

Rollright, King Stone Dairy, Chipping Norton

Judges were impressed by Rollright’s relatively new venture into this handmade semi soft cheese, having only been available to the public from July 2015. It has a savoury and rich favour, with a buttery texture and blushing orange rind. The cheese is made from the milk of just 25-30 cows and therefore is of the best quality for cheese-making. With the cheese growing in popularity, it is available around the UK and beyond.

And the winner is...

Truffle Gloucester, TruffleHunter and Simon Weaver Organic, Upper Slaughter

Truffle Gloucester is described by the judges as the perfect partnership between a moist, delicate cheese of the organic Single Gloucester lifted by the earthy mushroom partner of the foodie favourite, truffles. As a recent addition to the artisan cheese market it is already an extraordinary commercial collaboration and is a real crowd pleaser with the potential to be a global cheese.
