There is a need for a new industrial strategy aimed at rebalancing our economy and to promote manufacturing and engineering. We need to upskill our workforce and encourage young people into the sector to meet such an ambitious strategy.

To give momentum to towards this objective, last year Neil Carmichael MP for Stroud organised a festival of manufacturing and engineering in our area to celebrate the many achievements already happening, attract additional inward investment for existing and fledgling firms, and, most crucially, to encourage young people to see the sector in terms of their career choices. Following on from the success of last years festival we will be having a second week long festival this time starting on the 11th November.

The Festival has secured fantastic support from major manufacturing businesses in the area with Renishaw, Dairycrest, Delphi Diesel Systems, BPI Poly, Omega Resource Group Plc together with Stroud District Council events taking part in the Festival Working Group and . The Festival has also secured fantastic sponsorship from companies such as BPE Solicitors and Vertical Signs in Stonehouse. All secondary schools, some primary schools and Stroud College are also participating and encouraging pupils to take up the opportunities to learn more about industry and technology.

Dates, events and locations are now in place for the Festival of Manufacturing and Engineering 2013. Amazing progress has been made by the Festival Working Group to now have in place a structure for this years week long celebration.

The events will include.an 2 day exhibition at the Subscription Rooms, an Employment Law Reception to help employers learn more about this important subject and Inspired by Engineering to encourage young people into the sector.

All the events are free thanks to the great support from our sponsors and we would love to see as many people visiting them as possible. The Festival can be followed on Twitter @StroudFestival and on Facebook

Swan Lake. We know the music, we know the iconic imagery of the beautiful ballerina dressed as a swan, but I’m guessing that without reading the libretto in the program, most people don’t know the story. Which is why the audience relies on the dancers to tell us.
