An expert from accountancy, investment management and tax group Smith & Williamson is speaking at a major event in Gloucestershire this month which will put the spotlight on the housing crisis

Penelope Lang, private client tax partner at Smith & Williamson in Salisbury, will be among the speakers at the event organised by the CLA, the membership organisation for owners of land, property and businesses in rural England and Wales.

The planning, development and housing seminar takes place at The Barn at Berkeley, Berkeley Heath, on Thursday, November 15 and is also being supported by Gloucestershire-based property law firm Loxley and The Rural Planning Practice, also based in the county.

“The CLA report ‘Tackling the Housing Crisis in England’ identified the inability to bring land forward for development as being a key factor behind the long-term undersupply of housing. As owners of land on the edge of towns and villages, CLA members play a key role in helping to meet this need,” says Penelope Lang.

“Specifically I will be looking at the various options around structuring the sale of land in order to protect your tax position, principally comparing promotion agreements with option agreements, and conditional contracts and some of the pitfalls and opportunities involved.

“It all depends ultimately on what the seller wants to achieve and as always, the main message is to take advice as soon as possible.”

Other speakers at the CLA event, which runs from 10am-3.30pm, will include Matthew O’Connell, CLA national housing adviser, Ben Bolger, of The Princes Trust Foundation for Building Community, and CLA member Mark Heywood.
