Robert Love, a nationally recognised specialist solicitor in special needs education, has been appointed by Tayntons Solicitors LLP in Gloucester to provide a legal service to parents experiencing difficulties getting the education their child requires.

Robert, who has personal experience of fighting to secure his own sons special needs education, can guide parents through the legal labyrinth of negotiating with local authorities for their childrens needs.

Chris Price, a partner at Tayntons, said: If a child is diagnosed with special needs because of a condition such as dyslexia, dyspraxia, speech impediment or even more serious condition, possibly stemming from negligence at birth, they may require special needs education which is supplied by the local authority.

Providing special needs education can cost anything up to 100,000 a year and certainly into the tens of thousands.

However, local authority education funding is very much a finite pot which most authorities are trying to cut back.

Roberts role will be to act for the parents, liaising with experts such as speech therapists, psychologists and psychiatrists in order to secure funding from the local authority.

From our point of view it takes us into a niche specialist area bringing on board someone recognised nationally as being one of the top specialists in his field. Basically we are bringing in the cream of the crop.

Robert is especially good at what he does as he has experience with a son of his own who required special needs. It was this which sparked his interest in the first place.

This has become a vocation which has led him to become one of the most nationally renowned practitioners in this area of the law.

That personal experience gives him a tremendous empathy with the parents which other solicitors dont have, providing great client care.

Robert Love said: Children with potential learning or developmental difficulties are usually identified early on, either at nursery or school, and it is here they first receive the special attention they require.

But in circumstances where such support is not possible or is inadequate, a statutory assessment can be requested from the local authority. This will enable special educational needs of the child to be determined and identify the provision that the child needs.

Once the needs and provision are identified, they will be set out in the form of a statement detailing the support that the authority is legally obliged to provide. This process is usually referred to as 'statementing'.

At Tayntons, we offer specialist help and guidance to parents who have children with such issues.

Whatever the age of the child, we will help the parents identify the particular nature and level of extra educational support he or she may be entitled to. This includes students who are in further education.

We will then guide the parents through the stages, whether at nursery or school level, or requesting a statutory assessment from the local authority and the subsequent statementing process.

If for any reason an assessment request has been turned down, or the parents are not satisfied with the outcome of one, we can also guide them through the formal appeals and tribunal process.
