We reveal the winner of this year’s award for the Best Research & Development Project, sponsored by Hazlewoods

Last night, on November 2, we celebrated the region’s best innovative engineering and manufacturing companies at the third annual Cotswold Life Engineering Manufacturing Innovation Awards.

The glittering ceremony held at Cheltenham Racecourse celebrated the incredible achievements made by companies who really do put the Cotswolds on the map, drive the region’s economy and keep the area at the top of the tree when it comes to entrepreneurship and business success.

Thanks to both the nominations of the public and our well-respected judges, we have picked a winner worthy of the award for the Best Research & Development Project, sponsored by Hazlewoods.

This year’s runner-up:

Waterless Ltd, Stroud: Towel-Off body wash

The challenge was to develop an antimicrobial towel-off body wash for the NHS that would kill MRSA, C-Diff and Norovirus. A hybrid between sanitiser and its own early version of the towel-off body wash, the product will save nurses more than 50% of their time washing patients and prevent outbreaks costing tens of thousands of pounds.

And the winner is...

LTiMetaltech, Abingdon: Tokamak Energy

LTi Metaltech has engineered a new fusion reactor in partnership with Tokamak Energy to product plasma temperatures of 100 million degrees C - hotter than the centre of the sun. The requirement for pressure-vessel integrity in nuclear fusion is acute, with integrity of seals leaving no room for error.

In this ongoing R&D project, LTi has helped develop the world’s first spherical fusion reactor prototype targeted to produce limitless energy by 2025.
