Leading international academic publishers, Edward Elgar Publishing, welcomed the Rt. Hon. Vince Cable MP, Secretary of State for Business, Innovation and Skills, to its Cheltenham offices on Saturday 8th September, accompanied by Rt. Hon. Martin Horwood MP, MP for Cheltenham.

Meeting with Dr Cable and Mr Horwood were EEPs Managing Director Tim Williams, and Editorial Director Alex Pettifer. Tim and Alex used the meeting to discuss issues facing the academic publishing industry in the UK, a key export industry supporting UK jobs in difficult economic times. Among the issues discussed were online piracy of eBooks, research funding for UK universities and the ongoing debate around open access publishing. Edward Elgar publishing has a turnover of approximately 7 million, employs 60 people and 85 per cent of its output is exported to countries such as The United States, Japan, South Korea, Taiwan and Germany.

Tim Williams, Managing Director, said: We were delighted that Dr Cable was able to visit our offices in Cheltenham. We found it a very useful meeting and Dr Cable was very happy to discuss a number of the key issues we raised. He was also very pleased to learn a little more about a local family business that is at the forefront of the UKs export-led economic recovery.

Edward Elgar Publishing will be launching its first electronic platform, Elgar On-line, in the next few weeks which will have around 2000 book titles from launch.

Founded in 1986, Edward Elgar Publishing is a leading international family publisher in economics, business and management, law and the social sciences. It has successfully created a prestigious list with over 4,000 titles in print, publishing over 350 new books a year.
