Abingdon & Witney College won the award for best Training Provider

Abingdon & Witney College’s winning streak at the Oxfordshire Apprenticeships Awards (OAA) showed no signs of stopping at Blenheim Palace last week

Having been postponed in March due to the heavy snowfall, the 2018 edition of the OAA saw providers and trainers from across the county come together to celebrate the achievements of apprentices who are employed up and down the county, and all things apprenticeships.

Abingdon & Witney College won the award for best Training Provider at the 2017 OAA and it was a case of deja-vu yesterday as they took the prize home for a second time in two years.

Natwest, who sponsored the award, were looking for a provider who “works closely with both the Apprentice and the employer ensuring that both sides get the maximum value from the Apprenticeship.”

It is another notch on the award belt for the College’s apprenticeship team this year. Back in March, they were recognised as the leading apprenticeship provider in the South of England at the inaugural Annual Apprenticeship Awards, before narrowly missing out at the national award level.

There was also well-deserved success for one of the College’s apprentices at the OAA. Atlanta Hissey-Powell, an apprentice with Oxford University Hospitals, won the Special Recognition Award, which recognises those who have overcome significant challenges or barriers to learning or work.

Steve Kirk, Head of Work-based Learning at the College, saw yesterday’s award win as further proof the College can compete with providers on a local and national scale:

“Winning regional awards and gaining recognition from our Oxfordshire peers is always a fantastic feeling. We’re proud to be judged as the leading provider the county – our employer satisfaction rating is currently our highest yet at 98.6% and our apprentices’ timely achievement rates are the best in the south of the country, and the second highest in England (82.2%) so we know we’re on the right track with what we’re doing.”

“On the back of last year’s ‘Outstanding’ rating from Ofsted, and the success at the Annual Apprenticeship Awards, we currently have a model that is really benefiting the College, the employers we work with, and most importantly our apprentices.”
