We love nothing better at this time of year than spending some time clowning around with Tweedy…

You’re never too old to enjoy a good panto. Oh, no you’re not!

Across the country, thespians are getting fitted out in gaudy wigs, giant frocks and run¬resistant tights, and learning lines that have been faithfully recited – with a few nips and tucks to reflect the zeitgeist – for decades.

Here in the Cotswolds, the tradition is alive, kicking and booing and hissing for all its worth… and at the heart of this tradition is one man known and loved by all generations for his clowning duties with Giffords Circus and the Everyman Theatre.

We managed to keep Tweedy still for a few minutes to get the lowdown on this season’s festive treat, Jack and the Beanstalk…

Hi, Tweedy! I think I can speak for the whole of Gloucestershire when I say we’re delighted you’re returning to the Everyman’s panto. Are you looking forward to treading the boards again?
Yes, I love performing at The Everyman – such a great theatre, and celebrating its 125th Anniversary this year, too.

What’s the best thing about being in pantomime?
Bringing joy and laughter during the festive season.

I see you’re playing against William Elliott’s brilliant dame again. Do you two hit if off (either literally in a slapstick kind of way or, um, otherwise)? We hit it off straight away; we are able to make each other laugh frequently and we both have an anarchic side, so don’t always stick to the script.

What can you tell us about the character you’re playing – is he smart, sensitive, bookish, Shakespearean…?
I never really play a character, I’m always Tweedy but I am a wannabe record breaker this year.

As well as the audience limbering up for shouts of “Behind you!”, should we also come prepared for a good sing-song?
Oh yes, the song sheet is one of my favourite bits especially when we get kids up to help.

I do hope there’s going to be a comedy cow…
So do I.

… and maybe a giant?
It’ll be a normal¬sized cow.

You’re well known for your scary-looking stunts. Will there be any moments when I’ll have to cover my eyes?
It’s always difficult coming up with new stunts, but I have a couple of routines in this year’s show that might make you cover your eyes.

Oh, and finally… do you have any magic beans left over I could buy from you?
Sorry, no magic beans, but I do have some Tweedy toys left over that you could buy. [You’ll be pleased to hear that these will be available to buy on the night.]
