Radnor Hills

Based in the beautiful scenic hills of the Welsh Marches, on the Powys/Herefordshire/Shropshire borders, Radnor Hills Ltd uses water drawn from sources of pure mineral and spring water on land which has been farmed by the Watkins family since 1903. Its founder, William Watkins, started the business with his parents when he returned to the farm from university and has built the business into a successful enterprise delivering in excess of 110 million bottles of water and soft drinks per annum both nationally and internationally.

The company was started in 1989 as a diversification of a family farming enterprise. The mineral water/soft drinks business was a comfortable fit to run alongside the family farm, which grows crops, sheep and poultry, it uses resources from the land just as farming does and can be run without damage to land or the environment which is extremely important to farmers. Likewise the water sources are protected by careful management of the methods of farming used.

Far from being a small farm or cottage industry, however, the Company has grown steadily since inception and was named this year in the Grocer Fast 50 list of fastest growing independent food and drink companies in the UK.

As with any brand of mineral or spring water the USP has to be the clarity, purity and perfection of our mineral and spring water however, the company’s main focus has developed to include soft drinks and here diversity and versatility are key to a successful business. Radnor Hills has invested in state of the art processes to ensure that it is able to keep abreast of trends in the soft drinks industry. The company looks for a gap in the market and develops products to fit that gap. It is because of this that Radnor is so successful in the schools market, following the stringent changes to schools catering set out by the Schools Food Association, Radnor has developed ranges of totally schools compliant drinks and are now a leading supplier to schools all over the country.

Radnor’s latest products, Heartsease Farm, (named after the farm where the company is based), are a range of super-premium pressés bottled in both glass and PET and Radnor believe these are the only super-premium pressés to be bottled in PET bottles which are suitable for a much wider market than glass bottles. Heartsease farm reflects the heritage of the farm and Radnor’s passion for great flavours. Using the best ingredients available from the countryside, and blended with spring water from deep sources on the farm to traditional British recipes. The product has been immediately accepted by the market being listed by most of the Company’s existing customers and Radnor is delighted that Harrods will also be launching the products this month.

Apart from its own brands, such as Radnor Fizz, Fruits, Heartsease Farm, Aqua Splash and Radnor Hills, the company also bottles products under own label for multiple retailers such as Morrisons, Aldi, Coop and Sainsburys.

A recent development to the Company was the acquisition, in 2009, of The Lion, Leintwardine. The Lion is a country Bar and Restaurant with Rooms in the picturesque village of Leintwardine. The Lion sits on the banks of the River Teme overlooking beautiful views of the Welsh Marches. With eight luxurious en-suite bedrooms, all individually designed, stylish bars and restaurant and beautiful gardens for sunny afternoons and evenings by the river this is the perfect addition to the company. Radnor’s soft drinks can be purchased from the bar together with local ales from the Ludlow Brewery and Hereford’s Wye Valley Brewery, Cider from Robinsons in Tenbury Wells and a really good selection of top quality wines and spirits.

The modern British cuisine using local season ingredients served in the restaurant and lounge bar has contributed to the Lion’s five star AA and English Tourist Board rating and its AA rosette award making this a perfect place to enjoy a meal or weekend in relaxing picturesque scenery.

One of William Watkins key focuses both in his soft drinks business and in the Lion is the quality and taste of his drinks and food, and this is born out in both the popularity of the Radnor brands and the positive review attracted from guests at the Lion.
