Cotswold Life Food & Drink Awards 2018: Best Beer, Ale or Cider

Archant

With so many delicious beers, ales and ciders produced locally in the Cotswolds, the competition was tough. But we’re pleased to announce we have picked a winner worthy of the ‘Best Ale, Beer or Cider’ title

The Cotswold Life Food & Drink Awards are one of the biggest events in the local calendar and it is hugely anticipated by the region’s food and drink industry all year round.

We champion the best local producers, suppliers and businesses that are passionate about the Cotswold countryside and the future of our local environment.

Thanks to both the nominations of the public and our well-respected judges, we have picked a winner worthy of the ‘Best Ale, Beer or Cider’ Award, sponsored by The Midcounties Co-operative.

This year’s finalists

Medium Sparkling Cider, Severn Cider, Newnham

Severn Cider’s Medium Sparkling received high praise from the judges. The aroma was described as ‘lightly soured apples’ and the taste had a dryness and tang of sour and citrus with a slight sweetness. Judges praised the use of no harmful chemicals on the fruits leaving a great tasting sparkling cider. The branding of the bottles was well received along with the overall drinkability and taste.

Yubby Bitter, Yubberton Brewing Co., Chipping Campden

Yubby Bitter drank as a smooth British bitter. The judges enjoyed the copper colour with subtle caramel notes which were light in taste and described as a good balance in flavour and ‘not too harsh’ on the pallet. The branding and packaging was pleasing to the eye and thought to be well matched to the colours and notes of the bitter itself.

And the winner is...

Medium Cider, Pearson’s Cider, Tewkesbury

Medium Cider impressed the judges with its great taste. They noted it had a prominent fruit flavour with a nice sharpness and an excellent looking bottle which all added to the overall experience of the beverage from Pearson’s Cider. The judges thought it was a true pleasure to drink and enjoyed the light sparkling ‘appley’ clear cider.
