*SPOILER ALERT* Biscuits were the name of the game in episode 2 of the BBC cookery show. With their cookie cutters and rolling pins at the ready, the bakers set about to create Italian biscotti, French arlettes and edible biscuit boxes

And so, to biscuit week! The bakers faced a trio of crunchy, crumbly and dunkable challenges that saw some triumph and others fall apart.

First, the signature challenge was to create 24 biscotti of identical size and beautifully presented. Hoping that honesty was the best policy, Marie owned up her biscotti mishaps to Paul mid-bake. Unfortunately for her this made little difference to the steely-eyed judge when it came to crunch time. Across the tent, Ian triumphed with just the right amount of the daring ingredient, rosemary, in his orange and almond biscotti.

For the technical challenge, Paul set the difficult task of eight arlettes – wafer-thin puff pastry biscuits from south-west France, swirled with cinnamon. Before the final showstopper challenge – to build an edible biscuit box filled with 36 biscuits of a different flavour. The boxes proved a challenge, and Alvin crumbled at the judging table when he failed to assemble the box for his brandy snaps within the time limit. However, fellow baker Nadiya held it together well when Sue broke the lid to her fortune cookie bowl.

 

Results time and Star Baker was awarded to Ian before a result that no-one could have predicted at the start – former Star Baker and bookies’ favourite, Marie Campbell, was sent home. The Scottish grandmother, who the Mail on Sunday revealed had trained in patisserie at the Ecole Escoffier at the Paris Ritz for a week, said of her time on the show: “every moment was a fabulous experience for me.”
