Multinational corporations can sometimes be faceless, inhuman entities, but not so in the case of Delphi Automotive.

Product innovation is the key to retaining existing business, and Delphi’s Diesel Systems Heavy Duty Business Director Steve Gregory says success depends on the people who work there: “The only way we are going to stay ahead is through design, testing, validation and electronics – all the engineering disciplines - which is all about people. It’s very difficult to recruit engineers of the required capability and standard so we invest considerable time in looking after them. That involves setting out good career progression opportunities, from the time they graduate and onwards through their career, so they know the company recognises their value.”

Delphi provides apprenticeships and graduate opportunities for school and university leavers, while in-house training and staff development continues right through to the most experienced and senior positions.

“From personal experience, I know that a really good apprenticeship opens up a world of opportunity,” says Chris Tanner, who started as an apprentice 46 years ago and has been with Delphi since 2006. He is now the apprentice training officer. “Without that start behind me, I would not have had such an enjoyable and rewarding working life. I recently discovered that a machine that I helped build during my fourth year of training was still in use 20 years later, so my input really felt valued.”

The approach clearly works too. Delphi innovation is renowned throughout the automotive world, garnering awards and recognition from customers, professional groups and respected monitors of the industry. The company has won more prestigious PACE awards for innovation and technology than any other supplier of automotive technology worldwide. Delphi’s customers include the 25 largest vehicle manufacturers in the world.
